GABS Brewer: Brendan Chan from Brisbane Brewing Company
What sort of beer are you making for GABS?
It’s a multi-strain Brett-fermented, barrel aged Baltic porter.
What’s it called?
It’s called Mātes Piens (“Mother’s Milk” in Latvian).
Where did the inspiration come from?
We were getting our barrel room up and running, and thought this would be a fun first project! I have a Latvian friend who helped me with the naming.
What’s the weirdest ingredient you’ve ever added to a beer?
At my previous job I brewed with both crabs and lobsters. They’re pretty weird.
GABS drinking preference – tasting paddles or a full glass?
Gotta taste ’em all! Paddles are the only way (for a normal human being) to get through.
The Great Australasian Beer Spectapular is on May 19-21 at the Royal Exhibition Building in Carlton, Victoria, May 27 at Sydney Showground Olympic Park, NSW and June 16-17 at ASB Showgrounds, Greenlane, Auckland.
