GABS Brewer: Brennan Fielding from Burleigh Brewing Company
What sort of beer are you making for GABS?
What’s it called?
HEFSTER. Introducing Burleigh Brewing HEFSTER, an unfiltered Weizenbock, the edgier, slightly rebellious brother to HEF (our straight-laced German classic). There’s lots going on with this guy. A unique strain of yeast contributes to his complex ester & phenolic profile with flavours of banana, rum, raisin, plum, bubble gum and clove. While the deep orange colour, fruity aromas, delicate hopping and natural carbonation round out the HEFSTER drinking experience.
Where did the inspiration come from?
At Burleigh Brewing, we love a well-brewed wheat beer. We also appreciate what a technically challenging style it is to nail. So using wheat beer as our inspiration for our 2017 GABS brew gives us a chance to shine a light on what we think is a seriously under-appreciated style.
What’s the weirdest ingredient you’ve ever added to a beer?
‘Weird’ is not really my thing. I like getting everything I can out of blends of malt, hops and yeast – the depth and complexity of flavour that can be created just from that is pretty incredible. Adding ingredients that will enhance that even further or change the nuance of a brew is certainly something we love doing – dates, coffee, coriander, vanilla etc.
GABS drinking preference – tasting paddles or a full glass?
I’m a paddle guy. Too many beers, so little time.
The Great Australasian Beer Spectapular is on May 19-21 at the Royal Exhibition Building in Carlton, Victoria, May 27 at Sydney Showground Olympic Park, NSW and June 16-17 at ASB Showgrounds, Greenlane, Auckland.
