On the weekend I got this tweet – and challenge – from Pia over at Girl + Beer.
To be honest, it actually wasn’t that much of a challenge. I’d been toying with the idea of doing a ‘‘desert island beers’’ series, so some thinking about my favourite beers had already taken place. But in terms of cutting that down to one single beer that I would drink – forever – it came down to two beers.
Two Birds Taco and Orval.
Orval lost.
Lest some beer geeks heads explode and they leave angry messages like ‘‘Orval is totes awesome. Omageerd! How could you pick Taco over that? Newb.’’, this isn’t any sort of impartial ranking system.
Nor does it mean that, given a choice between Taco and Orval that I would pick the former every time. I wouldn’t.
What it does mean is, over the long haul, Taco would be much easier to drink repeatedly than Orval. As much as I like Orval, I couldn’t imagine downing a few while sitting in front of the TV. It’s a ‘‘one and done’’ – for a while – beer for me.
But Taco fits in with that scenario perfectly because it’s an easy drinker. But it’s also got some complexity brought on the coriander and lime peel added to the brew. So, if I wanted to stop and engage with the beer, I can do that too.
Also, I’ve had a bit of an ongoing love affair with this beer. I order it every time I see it on tap at a bar. I don’t usually buy beer by the case but I’ve made an exception for Taco – twice. And I’ve even penned an open letter to Dani and Jayne at Two Birds, begging them to put Taco into bottles.
A beer that is tasty AND I have a love affair with? How could I choose any other beer than Taco?

Hmmm. If money was no object, then 4 Pines Pale Ale – quaff forever! Coopers Pale if there’s a budget.
Hard to contemplate not being able to ever have another meaty IPA or Stout or caramel Amber though.
I’m probably with you on this. I wouldn’t necessarily pick the beer that left me speechless with joy & wonder (Baird Suruga Bay IIPA). Rather something more nondescript as I’m sure I’d invariably get bored of the same thing everyday regardless. Maybe just a plain old Aussie lager I reckon. Fosters, dare I say it.
