GABS Brewer: Holgate Brewhouse from Woodend in Victoria
What beer are you making for GABS?
A sour porter aged in oak on fresh cherries.
Does it have a name yet?
The Midnight Cowboy Project.
Where did the inspiration come from?
The beer is an experimental batch spawned from the drinking experiences and research of our brewers. Pushing into new territory with a sour ale is something we are all interested in, however drinking and reading only go so far, we’ve put beer in barrel to find out what we can create.
Do you think it’ll be a one-off or are you considering adding it to the range after GABS?
Due to the nature of the bacterial culture utilized to enhance flavour, this batch will almost certainly be a one off, however similar future beers may come from the experience.
What do you think of the concept of GABS?
GABS is a unique festival that aims to exhibit the extremities of brewer experimentation. A challenging task for the punter, it offers a testing ground for brewers to try new things on a receptive audience, amongst beers brewed with the same risk. Brewers really do jump in the deep end for this festival, and although the offering may not be a true reflection of what craft beer is all about, it is certainly unique and entertaining.
The Great Australasian Beer Spectapular (aka GABS) is on in Melbourne on May 23-25, 2014.
