GABS Brewer: Craig Wealands from Thirsty Crow Brewery in Wagga Wagga, NSW
What beer are you making for GABS?
Thirsty Crow is brewing a Strawberry Jelly Sour that is part of a unique form of collaboration with Bootleg Brewery (Bootleg will be brewing a Peanut Butter beer). We currently are getting made a plastic connecter that will allow you to drink from the two glasses equally from one straw! It’s either going to be awesome or… not so awesome, but that’s the beauty of GABS.
Does it have a name yet?
More than likely it will be called ‘‘& J’’
Where did the inspiration come from?
For me it was to demonstrate what a real collaboration is. From what I’ve seen in the past, collaborations are more about compromise with the two brewers settling on a recipe (and generally one of the brewers settling on their arse for the day). I’m of the thought a ‘‘perfect compromise’’ is when both parties are dissatisfied with the result. I believe we have developed a style of collaboration that allows both breweries to have satisfaction with their own interpretation, but brewed to be the perfect partner for each others beers (time will tell…)
Do you think it’ll be a one-off or are you considering adding it to the range after GABS?
I think we will keep this as a one off at this stage.
What do you think of the concept of GABS?
The initial concept of GABS was great, but importantly the vast improvements from the first year to now is clearly creating GABS into a must-be-involved event.
The Great Australasian Beer Spectapular (aka GABS) is on in Melbourne on May 23-25, 2014.
