Kylie Little from The Little Brewing Company in Port Macquarie is adding a new beer to the Mad Abbot range for GABS.
What beer are you making for GABS?
Belgian Trappist Quadrupel
Does it have a name yet?
Mad Abbot Quadrupel
Where did the inspiration come from?
A new addition to the ‘‘Cellar Release’’ Mad Abbot range (that is currently fairly limited in its distribution).
How much effort goes into designing a beer for GABS?
A little thought but no great effort.
Does GABS give you the chance to go a bit crazy and try something you might not normally brew?
We are a small brewery that is at capacity. Scheduling in another beer is difficult. Crazy is fine but you’ve got to be able to sell the rest of the batch after GABS. That’s an economic reality for a small business.
Does the spectapular bring out a competitive streak?
Not this brewery. We appreciate the opportunity to showcase our beer. If we look at last year’s GABS the beer we made (Wicked Elf Porter) was very much in demand after GABS and we had no trouble selling the kegs that weren’t consumed at GABS, or the remainder of the first batch that we put into bottle. We actually had to brew two more batches to meet demand.
Explanation for the unaware: GABS is Great Australasian Beer Spectapular, a beer festival in Melbourne, Australia, from May 24-26 this year where brewers make a beer they’ve never made before and bring it along so the punters can try it. Cool, huh?
