Head brewer Neil Cameron at The Australian Brewery decided people who attend GABS would like a little breakfast with the Kaiser.
What beer are you making for GABS?
We’re making a breakfast cereal inspired beer for those mornings when you need a little extra get up and go. It’s a chocolate and golden naked oat imperial pilsner.
Does it have a name yet?
Frühstück mit dem Kaiser (or Breakfast with the Kaiser)
Where did the inspiration come from?
Pilsners are what we do best here so that was a given and as the whole GABS thing starts pretty early we thought a wholesome and nutritious start to the day was important.
How much effort goes into designing a beer for GABS?
About 30 seconds hard thought – it was fairly late in the day when we got the nod from Steve, if you know what I’m saying.
Does GABS give you the chance to go a bit crazy and try something you might not normally brew?
One certainly tries to lengthen one’s stride shall we say.
Does the spectapular bring out a competitive streak?
Not really, some of the guys out there are certifiably crazy and will produce stuff that one would not generally recognise as a beer. All well and good but we need to go at our own pace and let crazies have a clear field with their pursuit into madness.
Explanation for the unaware: GABS is Great Australasian Beer Spectapular, a beer festival in Melbourne, Australia, from May 24-26 this year where brewers make a beer they’ve never made before and bring it along so the punters can try it. Cool, huh?
