GABS brewer – Thornbridge Brewery

Alex Buchanan from Thornbridge Brewery in the UK says they’re bringing a beer they’ve made before – but which has never been to Australia before.
Your GABS beer is Colorado Red. Tell me about that beer?untitled
In 2010 Doug Odell (Odell’s Brewery) joined the Thornbridge team to recreate a version of his Red Ale to be called Colorado Red. The 5.9% beer is crammed with speciality malts and with a twist on the popular American Red Style, it has been hopped instead with a massive amount of oil-rich English hops including Admiral, Bramling Cross, Phoenix, Pilgrim and First Gold.

It’s taking on the US red ale style but choosing to use English hops. What was the idea behind taking a US style and adding some UK flavour?
No great plan just brewers with like minds wanting to create a beer that reflected their own unique heritage and having some fun along the way.

I understand you’ve made it before but it’s never been available in Australia before. Why is that?
It’s a beer we’ve only brewed on a small number of occasions and it has had a very limited release – but it has been well received. The truth is that not many of our beers have been in Australia before as we are only beginning to export to you guys. Hopefully the start of a good relationship.

What made you decide to make that beer rather than something completely new?
Whilst we always have ideas for new beers we also have demand for ones we have brewed only a few times before such as Colorado Red and we thought it would go down well.

What made you choose to take part in GABS?
We know the new wave beer scene in Australia is really developing and we know from the limited exposure our beers have had there they have been well received. Being available at GABS gives us an opportunity to showcase our beers for beer lovers and it is a good way of spreading the word about our beers.

Being from the northern hemisphere, do you have much contact with Australian beers?
Apart from the ubiquitous Australian “wannabee” beers “the unmentionable and the undrinkable” we don’t but I’m sure we will see more of the craft beers arriving soon.

Explanation for the unaware: GABS is Great Australasian Beer Spectapular, a beer festival in Melbourne, Australia, from May 24-26 this year where brewers make a beer they’ve never made before and bring it along so the punters can try it. Cool, huh?
