Country: Germany
Beer: Weihenstephaner Weissbier
As hardcore beer nuts will recognise the glass in the above photo is the perfect one for serving a hefeweizen.
I’m not a hardcore beer nut because it’s a total fluke that I even have these glasses at home. About a year ago, my wife and I were shopping at David Jones when I spotted these beer glasses on special.
Not having any matching glassware (I think I was drinking out of the bottle most of the time anyway) I snapped them up. And was sorely disappointed from the moment I started using them.
Every time I poured a beer in, there would be a four or five centimetre gap between the beer and the rim of the glass. And that just looked stupid.
It wasn’t until some months later when I took beer more seriously that I understood why the glass was so tall – to make room for the fluffy hefe head. And, once you pour the right sort of beer into the glass, then it just looks wonderful.
Tastes great too – I just love the banana and clove aromas and flavours of a good hefe from Germany. And this is supposed to be one of the best, from what I’ve been told is the oldest brewery in the world.
And I reckon it is – there’s a lovely fluffy head and plenty of those great banana flavours. Makes me wish I had another one right now.
Would I drink it again?: Duh, yeah. Like I just said, I’d like to drink one right now.
