Beer Olympics

Beer Olympics – Day 16

image

Country: Argentina
Beer: Quilmes Lager

The first time I tried this beer was as a result of being sucked in by Dan Murphy’s. The chain had a brochure that listed great beers of the world (which, in the most amazing of coincidences, Dan Murphy’s happened to stock).
One of those was Quilmes Lager, which the brochure mentioned was “Argentina’s favourite beer” and offered a very appealing description of the beer. So I bought a six-pack, figuring it to be Argentinian craft beer.
Such lies. What it actually was was the Argentinian equivalent of of mainstream stuff like New or VB. Admittedly, tagging it as a country’s favourite beer should have warned me. I mean you don’t get to be the best-selling beer in a country without being bland enough to appeal to as many people as possible.
So you get a very weak pale lager with not much at all to recommend itself in the way of flavour. So if you’re not all that interested in having your taste buds do any work at all, then this is the beer for you.
Would I drink it again?: Nope.

  1. Yup, you have been fooled. Quilmes isn’t the best, though it is one of the most accesible ones -of the group of beers you’re not reclutant to try xD.

    • Mila,
Yep, I figured that there was probably better beers in Argentina than this. Maybe one day I’ll spy one of them in a bottle shop here.

      • Little piece of advice: if you ever come across hand-made beer from Cordoba province, don’t hesistate to try it.
        Good luck!

It's your shout
