Wollongong Beer Week – Day Three

This one is for my wife, who would likely be less than impressed if I didn’t pay tribute to the Wit from the Illawarra Brewing Company.
Any time I manage to convince her that we need to pay a visit to the brewery bar – and I think my description of the IBC Apocalypso as being ‘‘the best beer they’ve made’’ might have piqued her interest – she’ll opt for a glass of the Wit.

It’s not too far away from her previous favourite – back the days when it was the Five Islands Brewery – which was the Snowboard (I liked that too. Tim, are you reading this? Make some Snowboard. You can put some hops in it if you have to).

That was a hefe, while the Wit is – well, a Wit. And I say they’re similar in that they’re both flavoursome yet light. Both beers that give you a lot to taste but don’t feel overburdened. They even share some banana-ness – though obviously there’s more of that in the hefe.

Here in the Wit, there’s also a some white pepper and clove smells going on. Taste-wise, it’s as you’d expect – you can spot some orange peel and coriander (well, I assume it’s coriander – bit tricky to spot it as it often tastes like orange anyway).

It’s a delicate, yet well-made beer that ends with a dry, slightly tart finish.
