Beer Olympics

Beer Olympics – Day Five

Country: Thailand
Beer: Chang Beer

There is so much about this beer that puts me off even before I’ve opened it. For starters, there’s the fact that it’s called “Chang Beer”. What, do they think we’re too stupid to figure out it’s beer all by ourselves?
Then there’s the words “premium lager” printed on the label. To me the word “premium” on a beer label is another word for “crappy”. It’s sadly ironic that beers sporting the word “premium” are actually ordinary – they’re just trying to make themselves seem all fancy by pulling out a thesaurus and finding  superlative that creates an upmarket impression on consumers who don’t know any better.
Okay, end rant. As you might guess I wasn’t expecting much at all from this beer. But I was mildly surprised. It’s by no means deserving of the word “premium” (in the dictionary sense of the word, not the marketing sense) but it’s a pleasant tasting, slightly sweet lager.
I could imagine it going down well with a spicy Thai dish.
Would I drink it again?: If I was in a Thai restaurant and I saw it on the menu, I’d definitely order one.
